　　自由州大学是六大学院体系构成的大学有经济管理学院、健康科学学院、农业与自然科学院、法学院、文化科学院和科学院。自由州大学的医学本科课程被认为是南非同类学科中的标准课程。它的法学院在1999年被南非法律诚信基金会评为最好的法学院。它的自然与农业科学院是南非农业科学方面的最好的院校之一。它的商科与工科课程始终走在世界的前沿，它的微生物与生物化学系的生物技术中心（MIRCEN）是世界独一无二的。自由州大学的注册学生一共有21，000名，其中国际学生有2500人左右，中国学生有200多人。
